My next Up Close & Personal feature is somebody very special to me. I was introduced to Antionette of De Divah Deals – Fashion and Fun After Fifty through one of the blogger link ups. I was immediately drawn to her style and her very warm and engaging personality. Her posts are always informative, funny, light and positive. Her style is something that I adore and try to emulate. She is always dressed impeccably, knows what on trend, what’s good on her and you wouldn’t know it but she manages to throw in a thrifted item in her look! I’ve always believed in looking fantastic without breaking the bank and she’s the best (and my) role model for that.
She is one of the wonderful people I have met through blogging and I truly hope to meet her one day. For such an accomplished woman, she’s very grounded and approachable. That’s why even in the blogging world, she flourishes and thrives. I can’t wait for you get to know her!
What’s the reason behind the blog name?
I chose the name De Divah Deals because initially my blog was all about shopping, and sharing deals that I had found in and around the state of Delaware. It also featured thrifted hauls and daily outfits of the day, (OOTD). Adding the word diva with an “h” seemed appropriate, because every woman has a little “diva” in her somewhere!
Once I decided to shift gears and blog about FREE local events in Delaware, De Divah Deals became more of a business and less of a hobby. I was still promoting sales and taking pictures, but had become much more comfortable and no longer intimidated by other people’s stares.
My first big break or blogging recognition came from Ronni Cohen, the director of The Money School of Delaware. She had read my post about their signature event, Purses to Portfolios and was impressed with it. I was invited to a meeting where I was asked if I would be interested in blogging other Money School events which led to even more exposure. I am now on their staff as an volunteer instructor teaching basic blogging classes.
Shopping, saving and sharing deals found in and around the state of Delaware is still the foundation of the blog but the net has widened to include paid sponsorships, product reviews, invitations to other local events for coverage as well as many other accolades both on and offline.
I look toward the future with enthusiasm and confidence knowing that the next phase of my life will be exciting and filled with many more blogging opportunities.
Thinking outside of the box, mixing patterns and prints is something that I’ve learned from reading other fashion blogs. I follow several of them, including yours and have gotten inspiration from many, and for that I would like to say, “thank you” ladies.
However, if you have to rush or have limited time, don’t go because you’ll want to look through the racks several times. The first go-through you should be focusing on your list. The second or even third time you’re going much more slowly because people will find and then leave clothing hanging anywhere. I found a lot of this working as a Stylist for Goodwill’s 2014 Runway Show this past winter.
If you are looking for clothing and find something that you really like, try it on, don’t take sizes at face value. Also, you don’t have to be a seamstress to refashion an item to fit your needs. For example, you can cut the sleeves out of jacket or dress to make a vest; shorten a skirt; stitch the sides and sleeves of an oversized top to make it smaller; or just cut a pair of pants into shorts, etc.
At Goodwill, the new items with tags are usually separated so ask a clerk where there are located. Target is a big donator to Goodwill and you can find a lot of their ‘designer duds’ for way less than what they were being sold for in the store. For example I got a “Phillip Lim for Target” dress new with the tags for only $6.00.
