Welcome to “My Take On Tech” friends! Today I want to talk about how we can optimize our social media share buttons by adding your Twitter handle/ID. Do you use Shareaholic, Add This, Share This, JetPack, Sociable and other social media sharing plugins? Read on if you do!
A few posts back I wrote about my plans to write about simple tech tips that I use on my blog or my daily life. I’m not a technical guru nor claim to be an expert in the ins and outs of blog systems! Although my whole corporate career was selling and marketing IT solutions, when friends and family insist that I clean their virus and malware, I still tell them to contact technical support. I sell and market, I can’t code nor program.
My first tip I feel is one of the most important yet overlooked customization that bloggers can use to optimize their social media sharing. I read a lot of blogs and join a handful of link-ups. I believe that sharing is caring and extremely sexy! 😉 But oftentimes when I share a post that I enjoyed reading and try click the tweet button, the Twitter ID that I see is the plugin’s Twitter ID not the bloggers!
It should always looks like this below:
So instead of mentioning the blogger, the tweet mentions the plugin or the link-up company. This is one huge missed opportunity. Imagine a link-up of 100 participants and each one tweets about the link-up, there will be 100 tweets that mention inLinkz. Or imagine your most popular post being shared hundreds of times only to realize, “Geez everybody tweeted about my post but mentioned @shareaholic. Yes I got the traffic but it would be nice to have my twitter ID there instead!”
So how do you do that? Very simple, visit the settings option of your social media share plugin and just look for the field that allows you to change the twitter handle. If you use Sharaholic for WordPress, here is a step by step instruction. I’m pretty sure the process is similar with the other social media share plugins.
How To Add Your Twitter ID in Shareaholic for WordPress:
- Go to your Dashboard.
- Select Shareaholic from one of the sidebar links. Select App Manager.
- Click Edit General Web Settings.
- In the Share Button General Settings – Share Format Field, swap @Shareaholic with your Twitter ID.
- Click Save and TA-DA!
Easy peasy huh? I hope you double-check if you have already customized your social media share buttons. If you have questions or if you want me to talk about another tip, just let me know!
A couple of my bloggy friends have already asked what if the site is on Blogger, how do we do this? Since I’m not familiar with blogger, what I can provide are links on how others were able to change their twitter handles.
If you’re on Blogger and using ShareThis, check out the site’s own forum and their customer specialist’s response on how you can customize the twitter handle here.
